You will hear 'darn' in two very different ways. First, people say 'Darn!' or 'Darn it!' when something goes wrong, but they do not want to use a real swear word. It is a soft, polite way to say 'damn' - many parents and teachers use 'darn' instead of the stronger word, especially in front of children. Second, 'to darn' something (like a sock) means to a hole in it by thread back and forth across the hole. This second meaning is old-fashioned - young people today are more likely to just throw away a sock with a hole than to darn it.
