    Dang is a milder stand-in for damn. People say it when they are , surprised, or impressed, but they do not want the heavier swear: Dang, I missed the bus. It can stand alone as a little shout (Dang!), sit in front of a noun (that dang door won’t close), or join it (dang it). It is informal, mostly American in feel, and you hear it from people who were taught not to swear, or who are speaking in front of children, or who just want a softer edge. It still points at the same feeling as damn — , emphasis — so it is not polite in a formal essay or a job interview, though actually many listeners barely notice it. It does not mean a new thing; it is damn with the sharp corners filed down.
