You can picture jotting a few words down so a fact won't slip away — a mark you make to catch and hold something worth keeping. From that one act, note branches two ways: the THING you write down (a slip, a footnote, a ), and the ACT of marking/noticing (taking note, hitting a note, sensing a note in someone's voice). The musical 'note' is a parallel branch: a single sound you pick out and mark.
