Of North Germanic origin, from Old Norse lomr (loon), itself imitative of the bird's cry, especially when it is in danger.

From Middle English louen, lowen (rascal, rogue), probably of Middle Dutch or Middle Low German origin; compare modern Dutch loen (simpleton). Folk etymology links it to lunatic, which may have influenced its use but is not its source.
