A cormorant is a large dark bird that lives by the sea or by lakes. It has a long neck and a hooked , and it eats fish. It dives under the water to catch them. After it comes up, you often see it standing on a rock with its wings spread wide. It looks a bit like it is showing off, though actually its feathers get wet more easily than a duck’s, so it really does need to dry them in the sun. In a few places people still train cormorants to help them fish. It is an ordinary nature word — not slang, and not only for scientists.

組成From Old French cormaran, probably from Medieval Latin corvus marinus, literally “sea-raven”. Latin corvus (raven) goes back to the Proto-Indo-European word *ḱorh₂wós, which copies the bird’s harsh cry. The ending may also have been shaped by a Breton word for “sea”.
