A grebe is a water bird. From far away it can look a bit like a small duck sitting low on a lake or pond, but it is not a duck. Grebes dive under the water to catch fish and small water animals. Their feet are not fully webbed like a duck’s; they have flaps on the toes, which helps them swim but makes them clumsy on land. Many grebes build a nest that floats, and a parent may carry the chicks on its back. You might see a little grebe on still water in Taiwan. It is a nature word — birdwatchers use it; most people just say “a kind of water bird” if they do not know the name.
