A crackpot is someone with wild, not-sensible ideas — slightly crazy in a comic, everyday way, not a medical way. People also stick the word in front of a noun: a crackpot theory, a crackpot inventor, a crackpot plan to live on a boat and never work. It is informal and a little old-fashioned, and it often smiles as it insults. Newspapers use it when they want to wave an idea away as ridiculous. Though actually, it is kinder than some other crazy-words because it points at odd beliefs more than at illness — but it can still sting, and it is not a fair name for someone who is . Originally it was crack + pate, and pate is an old word for the head: a cracked head. Later people heard the second half as pot, which is how the spelling looks now.
