Picture something leaving your hand without much force: it rises, hangs for a moment at the top of its curve, and drops on the far side of a wall or a person. The word is about the shape of that path, not about strength. Everything else on this page is the same arc, either thrown around the house and garden, or aimed on purpose over an opponent's head.

From the word’s history

The packet's Wiktionary entry records the verb first attested in the late 16th century meaning to allow or cause to dangle or hang, taken from an older noun used for lumpish, heavily hanging things. A loose, hanging, unhurried movement sits close to the slow arc the word names today.

封包裡的 Wiktionary 記錄說,這個動詞十六世紀末最早的意思是「讓東西懸著、垂下來」,來自一個指笨重下垂之物的老名詞。鬆鬆地放出去、沉沉地落下,這種不急不猛的動作,和今天那道慢弧線的畫面是接得上的。

Two branches

隨手拋過去

弧線本身,用在日常。東西被輕輕送出去,越過擋著的東西,再掉下來。

verb · B2

To throw something so that it goes up in a high, slow curve and comes down again, often over something such as a wall or a fence.

把東西高高拋過去

球場上的高吊球

同一道弧線,但這次是算好的。對手站得近,低球過不去,所以把球從他頭上送過去,落在他背後。

verb · B2

In a game such as tennis, football, or basketball, to hit, kick, or throw the ball so that it travels slowly in a high curve, usually over a player standing in front of you.
