From Middle English lofte 'air, sky, upper region, loft', from Old English loft (a doublet of native lyft), of North Germanic origin, from Old Norse lopt 'upper chamber, attic, region of sky, air'.
中古英語 lofte 同時指「空氣、天空、上方區域、閣樓」，來自古英語 loft（與本土的 lyft 是同源雙式詞），源頭是古諾斯語 lopt——而 lopt 一個字就涵蓋「樓上房間、閣樓、天空、空氣」。這正好解釋了為什麼名詞的「閣樓」和動詞的「把球打上天」不是兩個不相干的意思：在字源裡，「上面的房間」和「上面的天」本來就是同一塊地方。英文的 aloft（在高處）留著同樣的痕跡。
