Latin consentire is literally 'to feel together' (com- 'with, together' + sentire 'to feel'); it entered English around 1300 through Old French consentir. That literal sense explains why one word covers both 'I permit you' and 'everyone is of one mind' — both are two or more parties whose feeling lines up.
