Picture the desk with nobody at it and the classroom with the lights off. A vacation is a stretch of time when the working slot is left empty — you might travel, you might sleep in, but what makes it a vacation is that the usual duty is not there. Notice how close it looks to vacant (empty) and (to leave a place empty); that family resemblance is a handy hook.
