far from others · adjective · C1
An isolated place is far away from other towns, houses, or people.
Picture a small island ringed by water — no bridge, no road connecting it to anything else. To be isolated is to be cut off like that: set apart, with nothing linking you to what is around you.
From Latin insula 'island', via insulatus 'made into an island'. To isolate something is literally to turn it into an island — surround it so nothing reaches it. That island picture still sits inside every modern sense.
