One way to picture this word: a single person standing in a space with no one else there — just you, nobody around. From that bare picture of 'only this one, no others', the word stretches in two directions: about people (no one with you, hence doing things by yourself, hence the lonely feeling), and about counting (only this one thing and nothing else added). At the edge it sharpens into commands — telling someone to leave you, or a thing, untouched.
