You can hold iron as the hard grey metal itself: heavy, strong, and — the stuff of gates, tools, and chains, the metal your blood also needs. Almost everything else grows from two things about this metal: it is tough and unyielding (which becomes 'firm and determined'), and a piece of it can be heated and pressed (which becomes the flat tool you smooth clothes with, and the verb for using it).
