From Latin hostīlitās, from hostīlis 'of an enemy', from hostis 'enemy' (earlier 'stranger'). The modern word is literally 'enemy-ness'.
來自拉丁文 hostīlitās，源頭是 hostis「敵人」（更早的意思是「陌生人」）。所以 hostility 拆開來就是「敵人性」「敵對狀態」。有趣的是 hostis 早期指的是外來的陌生人——跟 hospitable 的 hospes 同源，只是走上了相反的路：一邊把陌生人請進門，一邊把陌生人當敵人。
