One way to picture this word: two sides meet and each pushes hard to overcome the other — swords clashing on a field, two armies straining against each other until one gives way. That image of a hard, sustained struggle between two opposing forces is the seed. Everything else is what happens when you take that same fight and aim it at a rival, a problem, or a hardship instead of an enemy army.
