combat, fight against · verb · C2
To take action to stop something bad from happening or getting worse.
Picture two sides beating at each other — combat is fighting: people or armies striking and struggling against one another, especially in war.
From Late Latin combattere = com- 'with (each other)' + battuere 'to beat, strike, fight'. Combat is literally 'beating against one another' — two sides trading blows, which is exactly the core of fighting.
