What wears people down is the length of it. Both uses of this word live inside that sound: the child making it, and the grown-up who is doing the same thing in words.

A West Country dialect word. One suggestion is that it goes back to Old English grisan, to shudder, which would make it a relative of grisly — but the source marks this as a guess, not a settled fact. It is a different word from the grizzle that means grey.

From Middle English grisel, from Old French grisel, from gris, grey, from Frankish and ultimately Proto-Germanic. The grey is in the root, and everything in this branch stays close to it.
