You can picture a small, tired sound that will not stop. A child who is too tired to sleep and not upset enough to really cry sits and makes a low, unhappy noise, on and on, with no particular end in sight. It is never loud. What wears people down is the length of it. Both uses of this word live inside that sound: the child making it, and the grown-up who is doing the same thing in words.

A West Country dialect word. One suggestion is that it goes back to Old English grisan, to shudder, which would make it a relative of grisly — but the source marks this as a guess, not a settled fact. It is a different word from the grizzle that means grey.

Picture dark hair that has been taking in grey a little at a time, so that what you see is a mix: some strands still dark, some already white, none of it evenly one colour. That mixed grey is the whole of this word. You can name the colour itself, or you can talk about the slow change that produces it — and either way you are looking at the same head of hair.
