One way to hold it: a long, low sound coming out of someone who is not trying to speak. It's not a word — it's what leaks out when what's inside is too much: pain, misery, or pleasure. Everything else the word does grows from that sound.

Three branches

moan, verb, groan · verb · C2

To make a long, low sound because you are in pain, unhappy, or because something feels very good.

moan, verb, wind sound · verb · C2

If the wind moans, it makes a long, low sound.

moan, verb, complain · verb · C2

To keep complaining in an annoying way, especially in an unhappy voice and without a strong reason.
