The past form of furnish, used when someone put chairs, tables, beds, and other things into a house or room.

You can think of it as: someone had an empty space or an empty need, and you put into it the things that make it work. The house had nothing in it — now it has beds and chairs. The lawyer had nothing to argue with — now she has the list of dates you handed over. Both are the same act of something bare so it can function.
