Furnishings are the things that make a room ready to live in: the furniture, yes, but also curtains, carpets, lamps, cushions, and the smaller pieces shops sell with them. A table is furniture; the curtains and rug that finish the room are furnishings too. In this meaning the word is almost always plural — we say the furnishings, not a furnishing. Catalogue and hotel language likes it (“fully furnished” / “quality furnishings”); at home people often just say furniture or stuff. Though actually, furnishings is a slightly wider net than furniture: furniture leans toward the hard pieces you sit on or put things on; furnishings happily includes the soft and decorative extras.
