You can think of frigid as one step past the edge of comfort. Cool is pleasant, cold is ordinary, and frigid is the point where you cannot stay. Start with air so cold that your hands stop working. Frigid was borrowed from Latin frigidus, meaning cold, which comes from frigeo, to be cold, and frigus, coldness. The word arrived in English carrying one idea — cold — and every later use is that idea aimed somewhere new.
