A workshop where something is made — and what comes out is made to pass as something it isn't. Forge originally just meant to shape or construct (the same word as a blacksmith's forge); forgery is that making with the deception attached: a signature, a , a painting, built by hand to be taken for the real one.

From forge + -ery; forge comes via Old French forgier from Latin fabricārī 'to construct, fabricate', from fabrica 'workshop'. The neutral 'make by hand' meaning came first — the criminal sense is that making aimed at deceiving.
forgery 是 forge 加上 -ery，大約 1574 年開始有紀錄。forge 經由古法語 forgier 來自拉丁文 fabricārī「建造、製作」，再往上是 fabrica「工坊」。所以這個字的底層是中性的「做出來」，跟英文 fabricate（既可以是製造，也可以是捏造）是同一條線；forgery 就是這個「做」朝著騙人的方向去，畫面裡的手工感一直沒有消失。
