A forger is a person who makes a fake copy of something people trust — a signature, a passport, paper money, a painting — and tries to make others treat it as the real one. It is a serious, slightly formal word. You hear it in news and in court more than at the dinner table. The same person-word used to mean someone who works at a forge, heating and shaping metal; that older job-sense is still in the history of the word, but if you say forger today with no extra clue, people almost always picture the crime. A person who makes fake money can also be called a ; forger is the wider word, covering papers, art, and money together. People stretch it a little in talk (“a forger of stories”), but the core picture is still a careful fake, not just a casual lie.
組成forge (to make a fake copy; older and still: to shape metal with heat) + -er (the person who does it). From Middle English forger, forgere, from Old French forgiere.
