    Counterfeit describes something made to look exactly like a real, genuine thing, in order to trick people — counterfeit money, counterfeit designer bags, counterfeit medicine. It's always illegal and always dishonest; it's a much stronger word than just 'fake' or 'copy', because it specifically means made to deceive someone into thinking it's the real, official thing. You'll see it on customs warnings, news about fake goods, and legal documents.
