adjective · A2
Resting on the top of water, or moving slowly through air, held up instead of sinking or falling.
You can think of floating as a leaf on a pond. Nothing holds it down and nothing pushes it along: the water carries its weight, so it stays on top and goes wherever the water goes. Every other use keeps one half of that picture — either the being-carried, or the not-being-tied-down.
By surface analysis, float + -ing.
