Sunken describes something that has sunk, gone down under water and stayed there, like a sunken ship resting on the ocean floor. It is also used more generally for anything set lower than what is around it: a 'sunken garden' is built lower than the ground around it, and 'sunken eyes' or 'sunken cheeks' describe a face where the eyes or cheeks look pressed in and hollow, often from illness, hunger, or old age.
