調情
Think of someone coming close and then back again. Flirtation is interest that shows itself but never settles: it gets near enough for the other side to notice, stays for a moment, and leaves nothing behind. Every use of the word keeps that shape — the coming close is real, the staying is not.
The word is flirt plus the ending -ation, which turns an action into a thing you can talk about, as inform becomes information. So the noun simply names the act of flirting; the other uses grow out of that act.
