A detonation is the explosion itself — the blast, or the act of making something explode. News and science use it: the detonation of a bomb. In car engines, detonation can also mean a sharp, unwanted bang inside (drivers may call it knocking). Though actually, only need the everyday sense first: a loud, violent going-off of explosives. It is a formal, slightly technical noun. Friends would just say explosion or blast. It names the event, not the machine that starts it.
