verb · C2
In medical and veterinary writing, to cut away all or part of the male sex organs of a person or an animal, so that the body can no longer father young.
去勢;閹割
Think of one action: the male part is cut away and carried off. What is left still stands there and still has its shape, but the part that could father anything, drive anything or force anything through is gone. Every use of this word can be seen as that same cut made somewhere else — in a man feeling, in a flower, in a law. The thing keeps its outline and loses its power to act.
The source traces the word to Medieval Latin emasculare, built from ex- meaning out or away, plus masculus meaning male, plus a verb ending. So the parts literally say: take the male out of it.
來源資料把這個字追到中世紀拉丁文 ēmasculō,由 ex-(往外、拿掉)加上 masculus(男性)再加動詞字尾組成。而 masculus 又來自 mās(男人)加上小稱字尾。所以字面上它說的就是「把男性的部分取出來」。今天的幾個用法,都還看得見這個拆法留下的痕跡。
