To humiliate someone is to make them feel ashamed or stupid, and it cuts deeper when other people are there to see it. The hurt is not only private; it is the feeling of being pushed down in front of others, as if you are small and they are looking. It is a strong word. A teacher who laughs at a wrong answer can humiliate a student. A video shared to make someone look foolish can humiliate them. News writers also use it for public shame that is not always cruel on purpose: a team is humiliated when they lose badly; a leader is humiliated when they are shown to be wrong in front of everyone. That sports-and-politics use is a stretch, but it is common. The word is still heavier than . can be light — you dropped your books. Humiliate is meant to wound pride.
組成Borrowed from Late Latin humiliātus, from humiliō, ‘to make low’, from Latin humilis, ‘low, humble’, from humus, ‘ground, earth’. The old picture is of pushing someone down toward the ground.
