From cosmopolite + -an; cosmopolite is Greek kosmos "world" + politēs "citizen" — literally a citizen of the world, which is exactly the picture the modern senses turn on.

這個字由 cosmopolite 加 -an 而來，而 cosmopolite 是希臘文 kosmos（世界）加 politēs（公民）——字面就是「世界的公民」。這條字源直接就是現代用法的畫面：不屬於某一個小地方、而是把整個世界當成自己的地盤。順帶記住 kosmos 也出現在 cosmic、cosmos 裡，politēs 則和 politics、metropolitan 同源，一次記三個字。
