Think of someone who is not at home right now: a bag on their shoulder, a place behind them and a place ahead. A traveller is simply the person doing the travelling — the -er turns the action into the person. From that one picture the word stretches two ways: someone away from home for a while, and someone whose whole life is lived moving.
