核心畫面

Picture a line with no break points: joined all the way through, no stop, no gap. Continuous is "your finger slides along it and never drops into a hole" — whether the line runs through time (something never stops) or across a surface (nothing is cut or missing). At heart it's one stretch, held together end to end.

可以想成一條沒有斷點的線:從頭到尾一路連著,中間不停、沒有缺口。continuous 的畫面比較像「手指沿著它滑過去更多收起可以想成一條沒有斷點的線:從頭到尾一路連著,中間不停、沒有缺口。continuous 的畫面比較像「手指沿著它滑過去,從不會掉進空隙」——不管指的是時間上一直不停,還是一條線、一個面上沒有裂縫,核心都是「整段黏在一起、連成一氣」。

From the word’s history

From Latin continuus, from continere: com- "together" + tenere "to hold" — literally "to hold together." At root it means staying all held together, not coming apart, which is exactly "no break, no gap."

continuous 來自拉丁文 continuus,源頭是 continere,com-(一起)+ tenere(握住),字面是「握在一起、連在一起」。所以這個字骨子裡就是「整段被握著、不散開」——今天講不間斷、沒有缺口,正是這個「hold together」的畫面。

Two branches

時間上不間斷

這一組把「連成一氣」放在時間上:事情一路進行、中間不停。核心的「握在一起、不斷開」在這裡是「時間上不留空檔」。

持續的 / 不間斷的

空間上沒有缺口

同樣的「連成一氣」換到空間上:一條線或一個面上沒有缺口、破洞、斷開。核心從「時間不停」平移成「形狀不斷」。

no gaps or breaks · adjective · B2
