From Latin continuus, from continere: com- "together" + tenere "to hold" — literally "to hold together." At root it means staying all held together, not coming apart, which is exactly "no break, no gap."
continuous 來自拉丁文 continuus，源頭是 continere，com-（一起）＋ tenere（握住），字面是「握在一起、連在一起」。所以這個字骨子裡就是「整段被握著、不散開」——今天講不間斷、沒有缺口，正是這個「hold together」的畫面。
