Picture someone drawing a line around a piece of ground and saying, in front of witnesses and in set words: from now on this belongs to God and to nothing else. That is consecrate. Two things matter in the picture. First, it is done out loud, by someone with the standing to do it — feeling that a place is special is not the same act. Second, once the line is drawn the thing inside it is no longer available for ordinary use. Everything else the word does keeps that shape. A person can be set apart the same way and become a priest or a bishop. And when someone consecrates a life to one aim, the line has been drawn around a person by that person, with the same weight of a promise that cannot be taken back.
