To desecrate something is to spoil, damage, or treat as nothing a thing that is holy or deeply respected — a temple, a grave, a church, a flag, a war memorial. It is a heavy, formal, accusing word. Newspapers and courts use it. People also stretch it a little: they say someone desecrated a person's memory when they insult the dead, even if no building was touched. Though actually, it is much stronger than make dirty or break. A messy kitchen is not desecrated. The word needs a sense of the sacred, or of honour that should have been left untouched.
