Ordination is the act, and often the ceremony, in which a church makes someone a priest or a minister. After ordination, that person may lead services and do the other work of a priest. You meet the word mainly in Christian churches; other religions have their own ceremonies with other names. It is a formal, respectful word. Though actually, people sometimes stretch it for any official “making” of someone into a role, but the real home of the word is the church.
