Something overpriced costs more money than it should — more than it is worth, or more than similar things nearby. We say it of food, clothes, flats, tickets, almost anything you buy. It is a shopper’s complaint, a little sharper than simply “expensive.” A handmade coat can be expensive and still fair; an overpriced bottle of water is the same water with a swollen number. Though actually, “should” is again a feeling: what is fair in a tourist street is not what is fair in a night market. The verb is overprice, but English speakers mostly use the adjective: it is overpriced. The quiet opposite is underpriced — cheaper than it should be, which sellers fear and buyers love.
