    Chili is the usual American spelling of the hot pepper that British English as . Same plant, same heat — only the letters change. In the United States, chili also names a thick, spicy stew of meat and peppers (chili con carne, “chili with meat”), and in everyday American talk that dish is often the first meaning people hear. If someone wants the vegetable, they may say chili pepper to keep the two apart. The word is ordinary food language, not formal. Though actually, even Americans do not all spell it one way: you will still meet on some packets, and in the southwest, especially New Mexico, chile (the Spanish spelling) is the one people put on sauces and menus.

組成Borrowed from Spanish chile, from Classical Nahuatl chīlli (the pepper). Also used as a short form of chili con carne, from Spanish chile con carne, literally “chili with meat.”
