You can picture appropriate around the idea of something being made 'one's own' — fitted to where it properly belongs. As an adjective: a thing fits its proper place or moment, so it feels right. As a verb: you make something your own — either by grabbing what isn't yours, or by officially marking money as belonging to one set purpose.
