Appropriation has two quite different everyday uses. The one you'll see most in casual conversation and social media today is 'cultural appropriation' — taking a custom, style, or symbol from a culture that isn't yours, especially without understanding or respecting it, and often when the borrowing culture has more power. This use can start real arguments, because people disagree a lot about where the line is. The other, older, more formal meaning is about money: an appropriation is an official amount of money set aside by a government or organization for a specific purpose — 'Congress approved the appropriation for the new bridge'. These two meanings feel almost unrelated in daily use, but both come from the same root idea of 'making something your own' or 'setting something aside for a use'.
