You can picture something that is not here yet, but is close enough to be felt — moving towards you along a road you can see. Coming is the verb come held still and turned into something you can point at: the movement towards you, named. Sometimes what is on its way is a season or a new machine, sometimes it is next week, sometimes it is you yourself, two seconds behind the person who called you.

From the word’s history

The source traces coming to Middle English cominge and Old English cumende, the present participle of come, with a second route through Middle English coming as a gerund of the same verb. Either way the word is come plus -ing, so the sense of movement towards is carried in the word itself.

來源資料記載 coming 來自中古英語 cominge、古英語 cumende，是 come 的現在分詞；另一條路線則是中古英語的 coming，由 come 加上動名詞結尾 -ing。兩條路都回到同一個地方：這個字就是 come 加 -ing。所以「往這邊移動」的感覺，本來就長在字裡面，不是後來加上去的。
