You can think of image as a likeness — a copy of how something looks, captured somewhere outside the thing itself. The most concrete version is the reflection in a mirror: the thing isn't there, only its visual double. From that one idea — 'a look-alike of something, held on a surface or in the mind' — everything else grows: pictures on a screen, statues, the picture in your head, even how the public 'sees' a company.
