Picture something coming AT you — a question, a knock on the door, a ringing phone, a problem, an attack — and you sending something BACK to meet it. 'answer' is the return move: whatever was sent toward you, you respond to it. The noun is the thing sent back; the verb is the act of sending it back. Whether it's words, opening a door, or a solution, it's always 'the matching response to what came in'.
