Think of accrue as something that by itself while time passes. Nobody carries it in and nobody hands it over. You leave the money, the days, or the situation alone, and when you look again there is more of it than there was. That is why the subject of an accrue sentence is so often the growing thing itself, with the person who ends up holding it pushed to the end of the line.

Latin accrescere: ad- (in addition) plus crescere (to grow). The oldest picture is literally growing on to something that is already there.
