You can picture spend as taking something you have a limited supply of — coins in your pocket, hours in your day, energy in your body — and pouring it out to get something done. Once it's poured out, it's gone. The most everyday picture is money leaving your hand at a shop, but the same act of 'using up a limited store' carries over to time, to effort, and even to the amount that gets used up.
