Picture two hands gripping each other and twisting, with neither one willing to let go. That grip holds the whole word together. Point it at a disagreement and you get the commonest use: the same argument comes back month after month and nothing is ever settled. Point it at a field of animals that will not stay together, or a room of small children, or ten years of messy numbers, and the same effort turns outward: you grip, you pull, you keep at it until the mess is under control. The picture is a way to hold the meanings in one head, not a claim about how they grew apart.
