Picture a strip of ground where the grass has gone. Thousands of feet have pressed the soil flat and hard, until the way itself is visible from a distance. Nobody drew that line; walking made it. Two things come with such a path at once: it is easy — you cannot really lose it — and it is ordinary, because everyone ahead of you went exactly this way. Both of those feelings travel with the word wherever it goes.
