From waste: Middle English wast, from Old Northern French wast, Old French waste, from Frankish *wōstī 'a waste'.
源自古法文 waste「荒廢之物」，來自法蘭克語 *wōstī。
You can think of wasted as one picture: something went out, and nothing came back. Hours, money, food, a whole trip, even the flesh and strength of a body — it was used up, and there is nothing left to show for it. Every use of the word is that same empty hand, pointed at a different thing.
