If you feel drained, you feel empty of energy — very tired, as if there is nothing left to give. It is the same picture as a bath that has been drained: the water is gone. People say it after a long day, a hard talk, illness, or too much worry. It is everyday English, a little informal, and it is about energy in the body and mind, not exactly the same as sad — though actually the two can arrive together. You can still use drained in the older, plain way too: a drained lake, drained pasta, a battery that has been drained. The tired meaning grew out of that picture. As a verb form, drained is simply the past of drain.
